Summer Solstice

Today, Tuesday, June 21st, is the Summer Solstice.

Just what, precisely, does that mean?

In a few words: it is the longest day of the year in terms of daylight.

From this day forward, the amount of light per day will diminish towards Fall and then Winter.

I love every season with the very specific exception of Summer.

Summer, to me, means agonizing heat, some humidity, clogged roadways (in my case, up I-80), melanoma, carcinoma, my cancerous past, screaming kids, bawling infants, skyrocketing gas prices, rude vacationers, and long days to cover my fellow supervisors and deputies who customarily take the bulk of their time-off in this period.

Which is why, when I vacation, I do so in late October, December, January and February. When the fewest number of persons are on the roads or in hotels or in my way. And -- oddly enough -- hotel/motel rates are at their lowest. Imagine that.

I enjoy the rain, the fog, the snow, the cold, the sleet, the massive waves at the ocean, the horizontal snowstorms in the Sierras, the lack of people to mar my view of nature.

Predominantly, I hate people. If you vacation in Summer I likely hate you. I avoid you like the plague. You can deal with your fellow mindless locusts buzzing about with your ilk and kids. You can clean up your kids' vomit and snot. Leave the booth at the restaurant as though a war was fought there -- that's how inconsiderate you are. Bring your squalling horde of infants to the movie, dining place, outdoor venue I'd like to otherwise enjoy with my wife.

You can keep Summer. I stay at home and I work in the shade.

Which is why I can't wait for the Summer Solstice to subsume and grow smaller. Which means: people will be, by-and-by, going away.

This always makes me smile. It's all downhill from here.

Tomorrow is our summer solstice—the longest day of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere. For folks in the Southern Hemisphere, tomorrow is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. The solstices occur thanks to the tilt of the earth. Humans have been recognizing and celebrating the solstices throughout history; Stonehenge is just one example. But we humans are not the only creatures that pay attention to day length. The life cycles of myriad plants and animals are controlled by the length of the day.
Many plants and animals are sensitive to the photoperiod, or day length. As day length grows longer throughout the springtime, many species of plants begin to flower. Other plants are triggered to reproduce when the day length becomes shorter. In these plants, a protein is actually responding to the number of hours of darkness, not to the hours of light. Many animals respond to day length, too. For many bird species, a critical day length initiates their reproductive maturation and is their cue to begin migrating. Decreasing day length also prompts hibernation in many animals. In all of these examples, photoperiod is controlling organisms’ phenology—the timing of life events, like plant flowering and bird egg laying. Phenology is often tied to the seasons, because of organisms’ responses to day length.

Ryan Dunn only passed away this morning, but at least one public figure is blasting the late star for the tragedy.

I love this day, and not because it's my birthday. When I was speaking and meeting with folks in Florida, the organizers of the Sunday event, Johana Von Hohenzollern of Any Street, Ginger Eisenrod and Ginny, surprised me with this birthday cake. I was overwhelmed. I had never met these good and fine people before, but here they were, making me a birthday party. Believe me, it doesn't get any better than this.

NEW YORK (AP) - Two actors from the revival of the AIDS drama "The Normal Heart" — Ellen Barkin and John Benjamin Hickey — won the first two acting Tony Awards on a night that promised to be a big one for a musical that sometimes jokes about AIDS — "The Book of Mormon."
Barkin won the award Sunday night for best actress in a featured role in a play and Hickey took home the male equivalent honor for their blistering performances in Larry Kramer's AIDS drama.
"It's the proudest moment of my career. Being involved in something this important is I think a once-in-a-career opportunity," said Barkin, who was making her Broadway debut.
The best direction of a musical award went to Casey Nicholaw and Trey Parker for "The Book of Mormon." The top directing prize for a play went to Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris for "War Horse."

Ethan Allen ridership rises

State officials announced Friday that ridership on the Ethan Allen Express is on the rise.

The Amtrak line runs between Rutland and New York City and the Vermont Agency of Transportation said travel north of Albany saw a significant jump last month.

Ridership in May 2011 increased 24.5 percent over May 2010, according to the state, while revenues went up 25 percent for the same period. Ridership on the line south of Albany was up 9.1 percent, which revenue went up 12.1 percent.

In tonight’s show, King Uther’s long-lost daughter Morgan (Eva Green) unexpectedly arrives at his castle. Uther rejects Morgan’s offer of forgiveness for banishing her 15 years earlier so she shapeshifts into a scullery girl and poisons him. Merlin (Joseph Fiennes) arrives too late but tells Uther on his deathbed that Arthur, Uther’s secret son, must claim the throne. Morgan forms an allegiance with King Lot, the sworn enemy of Uther, and makes a bid for the kingdom.

“If outer space represents an emerging medium of warfare, then “cyberspace,” and in particular the Internet hold similar promise and threat. And as with space, access to and use of cyberspace and the Internet are emerging elements in global commerce, politics and power. Any nation wishing to assert itself globally must take account of this other new “global commons.”

The Internet is also playing an increasingly important role in warfare and human political conflict. From the early use of the Internet by Zapatista insurgents in Mexico to the war in Kosovo, communication by computer has added a new dimension to warfare. Moreover, the use of the Internet to spread computer viruses reveals how easy it can be to disrupt the normal functioning of commercial and even military computer networks. Any nation which cannot assure the free and secure access of its citizens to these systems will sacrifice an element of its sovereignty and its power.

Although many concepts of “cyber-war” have elements of science fiction about them, and the role of the Defense Department in establishing “control,” or even what “security” on the Internet means, requires a consideration of a host of legal, moral and political issues, there nonetheless will remain an imperative to be able to deny America and its allies’ enemies the ability to disrupt or paralyze either the military’s or the commercial sector’s computer networks. Conversely, an offensive capability could offer America’s military and political leaders an invaluable tool in disabling an adversary in a decisive manner.

Taken together, the prospects for space war or “cyberspace war” represent the truly revolutionary potential inherent in the notion of military transformation. These future forms of warfare are technologically immature, to be sure. But, it is also clear that for the U.S. armed forces to remain preeminent and avoid an Achilles Heel in the exercise of its power they must be sure that these potential future forms of warfare favor America just as today’s air, land and sea warfare reflect United States military dominance.”

Project for a New American Century (PNAC) This stunning statement by Panetta is being circulated around the internet with foreboding, because back in 2000 a paper was written by three men from the Project for a New American Century (PNAC) that used similar language to describe the need for a “dominant force” by the U.S. for hegemonic purposes. Shortly after their paper was written, on September 11, 2011, a massive crime was perpetrated against America which left 3000 people dead and a nation in shock; a crime that some likened to “a new Pearl Harbor”. Since then, our liberties and freedoms at home have been under constant assault by the Government of the United States, with many taken-for-granted liberties now gone. For the last ten years, the Bush Administration, and now the Obama Administration, literally “cashed-in” on the attacks of 9/11, using fear as a tool to get the American people to go along with illegal invasions and mass murder against Middle East populations that had nothing to do with 9/11. CIA Head Panetta, ‘the Next Pearl Harbor

During the Defense Secretary nominee confirmation hearing on Capital Hill (Thursday, June 9, 2011), CIA Chief Leon Panetta said “The Next Pearl Harbor that we face could well be a cyber Attack” and that “We are no longer in the cold war, more like the blizzard war.” There has been an increase by the Obama Administration stressing the dangers of a cyber attack. Just do a search on any search engine and you will get many hits and articles. One thing to keep in mind is the U.S. is teetering on economic collapse. A cyber attack could very well be a tactic on the drawing board to further the limitations of free speech on the internet, as well as provide a target of blame for the on-going economic crisis the President would like to keep covered up, by pinning it on such an attack.
One important element that is buried, while people focus on their concerns for internet freedom, is the growing militarization of space. A cyber-war or attack could very well be a legitimate concern of the Pentagon (more on this below).

Conclusion

Remarks about ‘the Next Pearl Harbor’ should be taken seriously. While most of us are concerned about internet freedom, a more nefarious purpose in starting “cyber-warfare’ may be desired by the elites. PNAC published a report on called “Rebuilding America’s Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources For a New Century” that lays out the need for US dominance of cyber space as well as overall military global dominance. A cyber attack could be a possible tool to bring about the next stage in authoritarian control over the populace; propaganda to get the masses to agree to more cyber space funding and to further implement the control of cyber-space. The PNAC report of 2000 makes it clear that the supremacy over space and cyber-space is a top goal of the elites.
Newt Gingrich said that we were now moving into the “age of transition”. This may be true, but we are also moving into the age of Cyber-space. We are moving towards a trans-humanist world or what the producers of the film “The Age of Transitions“ call a “post-human” world unless it is stopped.

Control of Space and Cyberspace

They go on to state that for the U.S. to maintain its military preeminence three missions must be met by the military forces: Global missile defenses; Control of space and cyberspace; and pursuing a two-stage strategy for of transforming conventional forces. In fact, their paper includes a section called “Space and Cyberspace”:

“No system of missile defenses can be fully effective without placing sensors and weapons in space. Although this would appear to be creating a potential new theater of warfare, in fact space has been militarized for the better part of four decades. Weather, communications, navigation and reconnaissance satellites are increasingly essential elements in American military power. Indeed, U.S. armed forces are uniquely dependent upon space. As the 1996 Joint Strategy Review, a precursor to the 1997 Quadrennial Defense Review, concluded, “Space is already inextricably linked to military operations on land, on the sea, and in the air.” The report of the National Defense Panel agreed: “Unrestricted use of space has become a
major strategic interest of the United States.”

The aims of PNAC and, now, the military on maintaining total control over cyber space become apparent when more and more focus is on Cyber attacks, and Panetta’s comment on the “next Pearl Harbor” should be taken seriously:

“In short, the unequivocal supremacy in space enjoyed by the United States today will be increasingly at risk. As Colin Gray and John Sheldon have written, “Space control is not an avoidable issue. It is not an optional extra.” For U.S. armed forces to continue to assert military preeminence, control of space – defined by Space Command as “the ability to assure access to space, freedom of operations within the space medium, and an ability to deny others the use of space” – must be an essential element of our military strategy.

Trying to make lightning strike twice The key to successful children’s films in the modern era, at least those that aren’t animated, seems to be coming from the realm of book adaptations. Finding a successful series of books and coupling them with an unknown star, a modest budget and a high profile character actor or actress and you have the recipe for success. Diary of a Wimpy Kid followed this to massive amounts of success and now comes Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer, hoping to replicate that formula.
Based off the “Judy Moody” novels by Megan McDonald, the film follows the titular character (Jordana Beatty) as she sets off to have the best summer of her life. With her wacky Aunt Opal (Heather Graham) around to spice things up, and her younger brother Stink (Parris Mosteller) to annoy her, Judy has to find a way to keep herself entertained as her friends seem to be having a much more exciting and interesting summer than she is.
John Schultz is no stranger to live action films aimed at children, with a fairly extensive history in the genre, and as such it’s not shocking that he’d be one to handle this, but he’s been handed a bad hand to play. This is a film that relies on a fairly inexperienced cast of child actors as well as a poor script that culminates in one of the worst things to happen to children in a movie theatre in a long time. Having inexperienced and marginally talented children is one thing but the film’s faults lie in a script that does no one favors.

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer is based off the children's series by Megan McDonald and they are extremely popular among young girls. Now Judy Moody is on screen in real-sized technicolor and she is winning over hearts everywhere.

If you aren't familiar with the book series, it's probably because you don't have a young girl in your house. But you're not alone. I hadn't read any of the books before seeing this film and it doesn't matter. It's fun, vibrant, energetic, and full of life.
Australian newcomer Jordana Beatty plays the spunky, fun-loving Judy Moody with great spirit and amazing energy. Sometimes a little too much energy! Doesn't she ever get tired?

The books mainly take place during school, but this feature film finds Judy out of the classroom and trying to have the best summer ever.
She soon learns that it might be a lot harder than she had originally planned. Her two best friends are heading off to fun summer adventures of their own, leaving her behind. To make matters worse, her parents are going to Los Angeles for the summer and leaving her and her brother Stink at home with their Aunt Opal, whom they've never met. Things are really low for Judy.
It takes a while for Judy to realize that fun is what you make of it. She is so consumed with having what she thinks is a fun summer that she forgets to enjoy the moment. She had a tightrope walking contest, gets a puke snow cone in the face, and searches for big foot. Sounds pretty interesting.

Heather Graham as Aunt Opal in Judy Moody

Heather Graham gets in touch with her younger side again, playing the vivacious and artistic Aunt Opal with as much charisma and energy as all the young kids around her. She is a great match for her younger co-star Jordana and the two have an amazing chemistry on screen.
Preston Bailey plays Judy's younger brother Stink who is focused on finding Big Foot - he has been spotted, so he must exist. He plays the annoying younger brother with amazing comic timing. Bailey is a great young actor and is hilarious in the film. He delivers his lines with such a funny sarcasm, you can't help but laugh at what he's saying. He's the life of the part when Judy is sulking about her latest adventures gone array.
Jaleel White (Family Matters) also makes an appearance in the film as the lovable Mr. Todd. He's the teacher every kid would ever dream of having in fifth grade. He does a great job connecting with the kids and plays a pretty integral part in their summer fun.

This isn't just a kids film, adults will enjoy the fun of it as well. Everyone can relate to their summer vacation, desperately trying to find things to do. Adults will love the fun-loving spirit of the film, but still be able to relate to the nostalgic nature of a great summer vacation.

This movie was painful to sit through. My 7 year old liked it but there were just random acts with no real connections or story. The child that played her brother spoke with such a speech impediment that he was unintelligible at times and annoying at others. This movie had potential but right away when I saw dad.. who looked like a Who from Whooville who'd had Botox.. That visual gave me the first clue this movie was going to be awful. If they had played it straight it wouldn't have been so awful, there just wasn't enough redeeming qualities about it for the adult.
The makeup artist must have been a beauty school drop out because you can see a close up on the Big Foot hunters face.. you can tell his pores have resisted makeup and you can see the spots.

Over all, I'd say.. skip this one and let the grandparents take the kids to see it.
